Starting point is the island of Djerba with its abundance of hotels, wide, flat and sandy beaches as well as its own airport. In days long gone Odysseus and his comrades fell under the spell of this corner of extraordinary beauty.

The main road from Djerba leads through the south gate 'The Gate to the Sahara' across 'The Roman Dike' towards the mainland and continues in a southwesterly direction via Medenine, then climbs towards the Troglodyte villages, cave dwellings in the vicinity of Matmata. The region to the west of Matmatma is uniquely beautiful, a fascinating combination of mountains, small villages and steppes. It was here that Hollywood director Lucas filmed the first Star War episodes.

From Tatahouine, former outpost of the Foreign Legion, it is easy to visit the surrounding mountain villages.
